Just built for us with the following specification:

Figured maple body, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard & bridge,

Nickel hardware, high-gloss vintage sunburst finish w/ hard case

Painter archtops are 100% made by hand in Maine USA with a level of care and attention to detail impossible to find on mass produced instruments. If you like the classic era jazz guitar sounds of Joe Pass, Tal Farlow etc then these guitars are for you.

Not all laminates are created equally….! Many modern laminate guitars are used on stage as they handle in a very predictable way and manage to resist feedback at high volumes. The problem with mass produced laminates is that they are generally very heavy and lifeless as opposed to the golden era of American made jazz guitars.

The top, back and sides of Toms guitars are vacuum formed veneer laminates produced in his own workshop on specially designed forms that took many years to develop and perfect, this makes for a much lighter responsive guitar but still with the classic jazz guitar sound, helped by the superb handmade H540 humbucker by Pete Biltoft, scatterwound with Alnico magnets to give an exact replication of the ’59 era PAF. Matching maple or mahogany necks are expertly contoured and perfectly mated to the body with the time honoured dovetail joint. Other specifications are available to order of course, drop us a line if there’s any other details you require.

A happy customer from the States writes a great review! This guitar has a very pleasing acoustic voice. It's deep and round, yet still has great note articulation. I prefer to practice, rehearse and learn new material un-plugged. Therefore, since I spend the majority of my time playing without an amp, I really care about a guitar's acoustic sound. This guitar has a wonderful amplified sound. I gig with Victoria amps. My main amp is a 518 (champ style). I also use a 20112 (deluxe style). I don't use any effects. I am very pleased with the amplified sound of this P-400. The main thing that makes this guitar stand out is the way single line solos "pop out" which eliminates the feeling that I need a volume boost. There is plenty of bass but not so much that it's ever woofy or overbearing. This guitar reacts very well to playing attack and position. I just love the variety of sounds this guitar produces from just what I do with my pick or fingers. I've owned some really nice guitars over the last few years in search of "the one". I've owned: Eastman 810ce, Heritage Eagles & H575, Martin CF-1 & CF-2, Gibson ES-175, Gibson ES-5 with Alnico V pickups, and Gibson L-7C with an old floating pickup. Compared to those guitars, the Painter Archtops P-400 has a more pleasing acoustic sound and has a more controllable electric sound. I still own the '98 ES-5, '04 CF-2 (sunburst), and '03 L-7C; they are for sale. This P-400 is the guitar I've been searching for. I would also like to add that the builder, Tom Painter, was great helping me choose the hardware for my guitar. I had a small issue with the nut 2 weeks after receiving the P-400 and Tom simply had me send him the invoice from my luthier. I love the un-adorned simply elegant look of this guitar. I appreciate the quality construction and excellent feel. Above all, I love the acoustic and electric sound of my Painter Archtops P-400.
