Dubois was a pupil of Darius Milhaud who was a prominent member of "Les Six", the loose knit group of French composers whose music reacted against the lushness of Wagner and the impressionism of Debussy and Ravel. Composing largely for woodwind and making use of unusual harmonies and textures, Dubois carried the light-hearted style of his teacher into the latter part of the twentieth century. This is borne out by the style of some of these "17 Dance Studies" which were published in the last year of his life.
