The Universal Edition began its reprint editions with works by the eminent composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Many of his compositions are available only in very early prints and are thus among the musical rarities. The mere acquaintance with the great F sharp minor Sonata, Op. 81, is a significant experience for the pianist. Robert Schumann claims that this alone would be enough to make Hummel immortal. He calls them a truly great epic titanic work and the painting of a tremendous, wrestling, resigned spirit.
